Icarus and his father Daedalus were imprisoned in the labyrinth by King Minos. Daedalus, who was a genius, found a way to escape. Out of wax and feathers he made two pairs of wings for himself and his son. Before the flight he warned him to fly neither too low nor too high, so that the dampness of the sea would not clog his wings or the sun's heat would not melt them...But Icarus, thrilled by the experience, got excited and flew so high that the sun melted the wax. The wings were destroyed and Icarus fell into the sea.
Sometimes we are like Icarus. Dazzled by the goal, trained to be the best, we want what we can't get, try to reach higher, achieve more, often without asking why, without looking down, without understanding the purpose.
Created to walk on the ground, we never stop dreaming about the moment we will grow our wings and fly.
My project moves between the two extremes, the sun and the sea, up and down, whereas we are there, standing in the middle.
Like most of my works, here too, I am interested in the relationship between human nature and the nature of the matter. How can one be explored in relation to, and through the other?
Icarus is a complex figure that symbolizes constant human struggle, the state between the endless desire to reach higher and the limit of our abilities.
In other words, the possibility of flying has a double meaning – physical and metaphorical.
The same is true about jewellery. Its shapes are inspired by the world of birds, and when they are worn on the body, they allow it to grow wings. But not wings like the ones Deadalus built, on the contrary – heavy wings, which remind us of our limitations, of gravity; broken and disintegrating wings, wings in the process of decay.
I chose to work with materials that symbolize this division: light, delicate fabric and hard and stable stone. I wanted to explore how far I can go before the work falls into pieces and is destroyed...
